John Goto
John Goto originally studied painting at St.
Martins in the late 60’s. Influenced by cinema, literature and European
culture he moved into
photography and began exhibiting with a retrospective
at The Photographers’
Gallery in 1981. In the late eighties he began a cycle of
exhibitions concerning recent history with the moving Terezin series which
concerns a Bauhaus trained artist interned in the nazi transit camp.
Reflections on childhood and fifties Britain followed in 'The Atomic Yard', made
whilst Artist Fellow at Girton College, University of Cambridge. Events
surrounding the fall of the Berlin wall inspired 'The Scar' which was followed
by a group of short stories in The
Framer's Collection. John's travels in Russia in the early nineties
formed the basis for The
Commissar of Space, which also attempts to think about the final years of
Kasimir Malevich in Stalinist Russia. Turning to our present Blairite
Britain, he has recently made Capital
Arcade, set in a fictional shopping arcade.
John has exhibited widely in Britain
and Europe and presently lectures on the prestigious photography course at
the University of Derby. He was recently Artist-in-Residence at the
National Portrait Gallery and is represented by Andrew
Mummery Gallery, London.
Workshop History
An intensely stimulating
exploration of time, photography, painting, electronic manipulation, sculpture,
photomontage and your own practice!
Late night talking with a lot of daytime
doing!, this workshop will explore the relationship of photography to time, past
and present, to memory and knowledge. If that sounds a bit dry - it’s not! One
of the most exciting and productive workshops of our year, participants should
bring material from their own family archives or found photographs, to examine
through making new work, their own real - or imagined - pasts and their
relationship with historical events. For photographers, unlike other artists,
working with past events demands unorthodox solutions. This workshop will
stimulate your creativity in other media - painting, sculpting, architecture or
installation, from fine print or image-text to large-scale murals, photomontage,
electronic manipulation or video, experimenting in the company of one of the
most innovative artists in the world.
