He created the first CD ROM with photographs and
sound which was ever produced. "I Photograph to Remember" is an emotionally
compelling compilation of photographic images and bilingual narration that chronicles the
last years of his parents' lives.
His long photographic explorations dealing
with cultural interpretations both in the US and Mexico have found their way into his
digital work, as digital ink jet prints, as a CD ROM and in a traditional book format. The
latter was created and designed over the internet, it's title being "Truths and
Fictions".
He has been a teacher over the past three decades in various parts of the world. He has
received numerous awards and grants such as a Guggenheim Fellowship and the National
Endowment for the Arts for his Digital Photography. Most recently his web efforts have
landed him grants from the Rockefeller Foundation, the California Council for the
Humanities, Fundacion para el Fomento de la Cultura y las Artes, in Mexico and the
Fundacion Bacomer.
His work is
included in permanent collections of more than 20 of the world's finest museums, and has
appeared in more than 125 exhibitions. Previously published collections of his work
include the award-winning Espejo de Espinas (Mirror of Thorns), in 1986; Tiempos de
America (American Times) in 1985; Los Cohetes Duraro todo el Dia (The fireworks lasted all
day), in 1988.
He has created a web site dedicated to photography known as ZoneZero, which presents the work of photographers,
artists and writers from all over the world. The site
is bilingual (English/Spanish) and is being seen
by people from ninety two countries who come by the tens of thousands each month. It was
recently named by NET magazine, as one of the five best web sites in the world in the area
of Art, and by GII (Global Information Infrastructure) Awards in the US, as one of the top
six best web sites for Arts and Entertainment.
