Morten Krogvold is an energetic, exciting,
forceful presence in any room. He writes, "Photography is always lying. It
is two dimensional and freezes motion. The lens cannot compete with the
sensitivity of the human eye.… Everything that does not add to the quality of
a photograph harms it."
His photographs - primarily his dynamic
portraits - have been extensively exhibited throughout the world, including the
USA, the Republic of China, France, Botswana, Canada, Sweden, and, of course,
Norway.
Recognizing that photography cannot stand alone
among the arts, he pursues all of them in his work and his workshops. On his
portrait collaborations, he writes, "I consciously use music - an art I
consider very close to my own - to create trust and atmosphere."
His 1999 exhibit at the Stenersen Museum in
Oslo unveiled new, explosive, highly abstract, and deeply thought-provoking
still lives. He works with his subjects - either the portraits or the still
lifes, in his own studio or on location for hours, moulding them in front of his
camera with his compelling, extrovert personality.
He further moulds the image in the darkroom,
producing a portrait that not only shows the person or object(s), but reveals
the very inner being on many levels with the same intensity. He carries that
intensity into his teaching, through his extensive program of workshops in
Norway, South Africa, USA and throughout Europe.
Workshop History
A practical workshop for all
levels concentrating on lighting craft and printing - and getting into the right
frame of mind to realise your ideas.
About awareness, about seeing, about hearing,
about paying attention and the question: What is important for you? Why and what
do you do about it? Slide lectures about the 165 year old history of
photography, technical issues for those that need it. Studio lights, basic
studio lightning, camera, darkroom, theory and how to! Poetry, music and
drawing, photography, portraiture and documentary - and loads of videos and
brilliant examples of photography from the cinema. Morten will help with work he
thinks he can improve or make different in the darkroom. We finish with an
exhibition of the work you have produced on the workshop.
