Martin Rieser Born in 1951 Martin Rieser took a tortuous path
via an honours degree in English Literature, a couple of years with a
professional printmaking studio in Paris, an advanced course in art and design,
printmaking and photography, at Goldsmiths College, to head the Electronic Arts
Department of the University of West England, completing an MA in printed
ceramics in 1992. In 1998 he took up a new position as Senior Lecturer in
Digital Media at Napier University, Edinburgh. Exhibitions of photographs and
prints, ground breaking computer-generated ceramic transfers and large scale
computer images (Exhibition and book Digital Panoramas in 1994) have been
seen from St. Ives to The Royal Festival Hall; Utrecht to New York; The Science
Centre, Bristol to The Barbican. He has researched and published articles on
many areas of the electronic print and real time animation of the human figure,
while organising computer animation and computer art festivals. Collaborative
CD-ROMs include From Silver to Silicon and multimedia work around the
Greek myths, called Labyrinth, which was part of the Dream House
exhibition in collaboration with Ship of Fools, at F-Stop in Bath and was shown
in Germany, Holland and the US during 1999. Another work, Screening the Virus
is a Watershed commission for World Aids Day. His is currently working on a
digital installation due to be shown at Axiom Gallery in Cheltenham in 2000 as
part of the Cheltenham Literary Festival. George Coulsting, besides being an artist of
considerable talent, working recently with immersive imaging, keeps the computer
department and especially graphics software in incredible order at UWE, if there’s
something you want to know or fix and he can’t do it, then give up - there’s
no-one more knowledgeable in the country! Peter has taught and lectured on electronic
photography for 6 years and through dogged persistence and curiosity has become
a source of considerable expertise in ‘going electronic’ at the cheapest
possible cost! Workshop History Electronic darkroom methods
explored - cameras, computer software and printers - hands on! Using Photoshop
for Creative Photography Starting with the premise that any image
created via a lens uses the same ‘language’, this workshop (one of the first
in this country), will marry conventional photographic language with practical
working sessions in electronic imaging, substituting electronic equipment for
established methods. While keeping investigations of perception foremost, a
practical working knowledge of electronic image capture will be introduced via
video or still electronic cameras and scanners, as well as Photo CD. Electronic
darkroom methods will be explored using Adobe PhotoShop software (one computer
per participant) and the art of printing electronically critically evaluated
with special attention to new advances in archivility with ink-jet prints.
Morphing and Desktop Publishing will be covered. If possible bring a video
camcorder or still electronic camera (and don’t forget your particular
connectors!), negatives, prints or discs for inputting. Louis Pasteur George, besides being an artist of considerable
