Les McLean
Les McLean concentrates on the traditional
skills related to the Silver Print and has been giving workshops on Fine
Printing for the past 15 years. His own work has, for the last 7 years been in
the documentary field, the last body of work being about the communities of
North and West Belfast.
He has been writing darkroom columns for the
last 4 years for Photon and Darkroom User, in addition to articles
in many other magazines. He regularly teaches his own method of negative
production and printing in a number of colleges including Edinburgh College of
Art, and carries out printing and toning seminars on behalf of Ilford and
Fotospeed. Les firmly believes in the need to master the techniques of
photography in order to express emotion, feeling or mood to be conveyed by the
final print. Technique is not an end in itself, but an (albeit important) tool
in the world of expressive image making.
Workshop History
Printing and critique weekend,
zone system and variable contrast techniques in both theory and practice
In the fine printing workshops Les will discuss
the ideas and practical methods involved in exposure systems (including the Zone
System), used to help translate the ‘real world’ into a satisfying
photographic print. There will be demonstrations of archival processing, fine
printing and exhibition presentation and a consideration of the impact and
interface to new electronic techniques.
