Jem uses colour in contemporary documentary photography, his prints are
considered as "Art Objects" in their own right. He studied photography at the
L.C.P. from 1969, and since 1986 has lead courses at Exeter and the University of
Plymouth. His photographic series include Bristol City Docks (1977), Paintings
of the West of Cornwall (1982), The Red River (1982-87), The Garden
(1990), Wasteland (1992), and Raft of Carrots (1992). His work can be
seen in The V&A and the British Council Collection. Two highly acclaimed books - The
Red River and The Raft of Carrots have pointed to new directions in British
photography and new ways of exploring the creative process.
