Helena Kovacs Helena Kovacs was a Director of the
Photographers’ Gallery in London from 1975-79 and well known for helping
photographers get a foothold in the ‘market’ through her astute selections
for the print room. She was subsequently Director of Contrasts Gallery, one of
the UK’s first private galleries solely dedicated to the promotion and sale of
fine art photography, and Managing Director of Comstock, one of the world’s
largest stock photography companies and a major player within the world of new
media. In 1998 she founded Focus Gallery in central London. Focus Gallery Focus is dedicated to the
showing of photography as an art form, with exhibitions of contemporary and
vintage prints by outstanding international photographers, including works by
Magnum. It is run by Helena and veteran photographer and author, Dorothy Bohm
whose experience in the visual communications and photography business completes
the dynamic duo. Besides running several exhibitions each year it will maintain
a collection of out-of-print and rare collector’s books and portfolios,
posters and rare photographic postcards, as well as selling original prints.
Occasionally, talks and events on photography are held as well as book signings. Dorothy Bohm Dorothy Bohm was born in
Konigsberg, East Prussia (now part of Poland) and came to England in 1939. She
studied photography in Manchester where she subsequently taught and went on to
establish her own photographic portrait studio. She founded the Photographer’s
Gallery with Sue Davies in 1971. Having worked with black and white for many
years, she began working with colour in about 1980 - "I find that colour
requires a different sensibility. Reality and unreality mix more harmoniously. I
can give vent more readily to my fantasies; it allows more scope for the
dream!" Her work has been widely published and exhibited, most recently in
1998 at the Royal Photographic Society, Bath, the National Theatre and the Focus
Gallery, London. Extensive world travel has given her work a cosmopolitan
quality. She says: "I have tried to create order out of chaos-to find
stability in flux. I am conscious of the universality of human longing and have
tried to express this in my photographs". Workshop History An entire weekend with the
Directors of Focus Gallery, London - portfolio reviews, what’s new and ways of
getting work shown. Helena’s encyclopaedic knowledge of
Photography’s gallery scene, especially fine art & documentary traditions,
will give insights when reviewing participants work. This intensive weekend will
cover approaches to getting work seen by the public, curators and buyers, as
well as exploring the development of the photograph and its contemporary
siblings as ‘art objects’. An informal workshop for all looking for insights
into what makes photography tick, and getting it out of the box! As a bonus,
Dorothy Bohm will show her own work, tracing her amazing career, at the centre
of British photography. Check out the
