Eamonn McCabe was picture editor of The
Guardian from 1988- 2000 and has changed the look of quality English newspapers.
His intelligent sports photographs will have been seen by anyone glancing
through the back pages of a newspaper for the last two decades. He has been Sports
Photographer of the Year an amazing four times. In 1985 he was nominated Photographer
of the Year and in 1988 appointed Fellow at the National Museum in Bradford.
Shows at numerous locations including The Photographers’ Gallery, London and
the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, along with a great number of important
television and radio programmes and publications, have made him a much sought
after public speaker. He lectures occasionally at colleges around the country on
the contentious role of the ‘image’ in the media, writes regularly on
photography in The Guardian and has recently returned to his own work in
portraiture. He is currently an Honorary Professor at the Thames Valley
University. Eamonn McCabe: Photographer was published in 1988, Ice in
1997.
Workshop History
A great sports photographer
who, as picture editor of The Guardian, hauled British press photography into
the 20th century.
In a very informal atmosphere, Eamonn will
guide the group through the nuts and bolts of successful reportage and sports
photography to an awareness of ‘what makes a good picture’ and then shown
how to get it published. Through a great slide lecture Eamonn will give
generously from his considerable expertise in the history of photography. A
short - therefore real time - assignment will present the problem of anchoring
an event visually, and how to distil into a very limited number of images the
essence of a particular brief. Help will be given to solve both technical, and
especially, selection problems, with a view to presenting your work in a
confident way. Not just for photojournalists but all those interested in
contemporary issues.
